What is difference between Search engine submission and Directory Submission?

By understanding the difference between a search engine and a search engine directory we can easily figure out the difference between Search engine submission and directory submission.

Search engine – It is a portal or an online tool which can be used to find information or website from internet, the search is made by the help of automated programs called crawlers or spiders( Google’s crawler), these crawlers looks for the relevant data as per the keywords used for searching.

Directory or Search Engine Directory – It’s a Human-organised catalogue of websites in which websites are listed in various categories by real humans who explore the internet and discovers new sites and information or just review the submitted sites.

So a directory is purely operated by humans, unlike Search engine which uses an automated program to find relevant data as per the keyword used.

Both of submissions are mainly done in order to create effective backlinks, but in Search engine submission we directly submit our website or a webpage to the search engine, by doing this we make the search engines aware of the presence of our website, although it is not very much necessary as the big search engines like Yahoo, Google, Bing has their own crawlers (the robots, or automated programs) which themselves indexes the websites, but it might take longer time, but when we update our website or add new page to our website we can’t wait for search engines to index our website or update webpage and that’s why it is preferable to submit the updated webpage to search engine. Submission can be done in two ways, either by submitting the sitemap of our complete website or just by submitting the URL of home page or the Landing Page (the page where we want our customers to arrive) of our website. Whereas in directory submission we create inbound external links (links which are redirecting to our website from other website) on different relevant websites, it is advised that links should be made on websites which have higher PR than your website or at least equal PR.
